First announced at the September State of Play event last year, Ironwood Studios’ first title Pacific Drive is a unique driving survival game that sees players venture into the fictional “Olympic Exclusion Zone,” an abandoned scientific research site plagued by supernatural horrors and terrain anomalies. The game’s main plot device is the player’s car, which serves as both a terrain traversal device and as a shield against the enemies the player encounters throughout the game.

The new gameplay trailer, narrated through “Field Research Training Module One,” introduces fans to the car repair and customization mechanic. Components of the car, especially those made of steel and rubber, will accumulate damage throughout the player’s time in the Olympic Exclusion Zone. Players can perform repairs at the auto shop safehouse and on the go as well, using resources acquired during their runs in the Zone. Deeper runs into rougher or dangerous zones will necessitate corresponding modifications or upgrades for the car, ranging from more powerful engines to terrain-specific wheels and heavy armor.

The Olympic Exclusion Zone is host to a wide range of terrifying “Anomalies,” which appear to be animated terrain features and objects such as hostile Tesla towers, masses of metal that dash across the map, and many other such NPCs that will attempt to attack the player’s car. Pacific Drive encourages evasive and avoidant gameplay instead of heads-on approaches, especially when it comes to the Zone Storms that irradiate large regions of the map and deal devastating damage to nearby players and their vehicles.

Pacific Drive will launch on PS5 and PC (through Steam and Epic Games Store) in 2023.
