Ori developers Moon Studios have revealed that they have gone “fully independent” after agreeing to a purchasing deal with Take-Two Interactive for the publishing rights to their latest game, No Rest for the Wicked.

The studio expresses their excitement as their future is entirely in their control.

Moon Studios Regains Full Creative Control Over No Rest for the Wicked

As revealed in the latest No Rest for the Wicked dev dairy, Moon Studio is now fully independent with the publishing purchase of No Rest for the Wicked. Although Private Division, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, was Moon Studio’s original publisher, Take-Two had sold off the publisher to an unknown buyer back in November. However, the company retained the rights to No Rest of the Wicked, in which case, Moon Studios’ head saw an opportunity.

This brings us to today, where the studio celebrates with the announcement of going independent. While a giant publisher may no longer back them, it ultimately means that they now have full control.

“We have secured the publishing rights for No Rest for the Wicked, allowing us to execute our vision without restrictions,” they said in the dev diary.

Not familiar with No Rest for the Wicked, here’s an overview of the game’s story:

“From Moon Studios, the award-winning developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps comes No Rest for the Wicked, a visceral, precision Action RPG set to reinvent the genre.

The year is 841 – King Harol is dead. As word of his death echoes throughout the kingdom, the crown passes to his arrogant, yet untested son Magnus.

Even worse, the Pestilence, an unholy plague not seen for a thousand years, has returned. It sweeps across the land, corrupting everything and everyone it touches. Madrigal Seline, a ruthlessly ambitious figure in the church, sees the Pestilence as a chance to prove herself in the eyes of her god.

These forces converge on the backwater Isola Sacra, where rebel groups and the provincial government fight for control amid the isle’s crumbling ruins.

You are a Cerim – a member of a group of mystical holy warriors imbued with remarkable powers and sworn to defeat the Pestilence at any cost. But the task will prove increasingly challenging as you become entangled in the people’s plight and the vast political struggle of this downtrodden land. Chaos will pull you in every direction as you seek to cleanse the land of wickedness and shape the kingdom’s fate.”

No Rest for the Wicked is currently available on PC via early access. No release date has been announced, though a console release is also planned.
