The newest Onimusha, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, may be more of a “reboot” than a sequel, as it’s been confirmed that it won’t have connections to previous games, and players won’t need to have played past games in the franchise to understand what’s happening.

Not only that, but if you’re tired of open world games, we have good news for you, as it’s been confirmed that Way of the Sword will be more of a linear experience.

New Onimusha: Way of the Sword Details Confirms Story Length, Puzzles, and More

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Famitsu has just published a brand-new interview with Akihito Kadowaki, the Producer of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Satoru Nihei, the Director of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The interview revealed all kinds of new details about the upcoming title, which will be released next year.

We’ve summarized several of those details in a list below to make things easier and shorter to read.

  • The game will likely have a CERO Z rating (18+) in Japan, though they’ll have options to turn off blood splatter and dismemberment.
  • Because this is the first entry in 20 years, they decided to have no connection to prior games for new fans to be able to experience without prior knowledge.
  • They hint at an appearance of Sasaki Kojiro, one of Miyamoto Musashi’s famous rivals.
  • Miyamoto Musashi will have companions during his journey. They confirm one based on real historical figures.
  • Demons are originally designed.
  • A parry system is confirmed, with he sword even temporarily powering up.
  • Shown off in the trailer was being able to pick up environments. These can be used in a number of ways, with one such using a table as cover.
  • Special moves work in a similar function as tactical shells from previous games.
  • The only weapon to be confirmed for the game is a sword. It will have a variety of weapons.
  • The team is making adjustments to the difficulty to ensure it’s not too easy but also wants to be able to cater to a wider audience.
  • No decision on the difficulty options has been made yet.
  • Still undecided, but they believe the game will take roughly 20 hours to beat.
  • Puzzles are coming back.
  • The game is stage-based, meaning you advance through it by completing them. It’s not open-world.
  • At the moment, they are not planning to use someone famous to make a theme song for the game.

Other tidbits of information were shared, such as the face model’s background and the decision to pick them, but I believe these are the biggest things to come out of the interview. So far, I’m liking what’s been confirmed and said about the game, though I do hope they find the right difficulty level to make it challenging enough.

Thankfully, they have plenty of time to do that, as Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to arrive sometime in 2026. It will be released on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In the meantime, we’ll have Onimusha 2 remaster to look forward to when it releases on May 23, 2025.
