Phantom Blade Zero Won’t Respawn Defeated Enemies; Weapon Upgrades Can Be Reset at Anytime Confirmed
Tired of slaying enemies in one area and then watching seeing them respawn once you backtrack? This mechanic, which is a staple of Souls-like games, seems to be the norm nowadays, but that won’t be the case with Phantom Blade Zero.
Chinese studio S-Game has confirmed a few things about the upcoming action game, and enemies not respawning is one of them, and there’s a good reason why they’re not going this route.
Phantom Blade Zero Won’t Have Respawning Enemies Since S-Game Wants Players to Explore
In a group interview, Liang Qiwei, also known as “Soulframe” and is the game director and founder of S-Game, was asked why enemies don’t respawn (or revive), which was a big change, since in the original demo of the game, enemies did respawn.
Qiwei answered, “There are two reasons. One reason is that we want everything in the game to be valuable. I don’t want them to experience the same content over and over. Another reason is to focus on advancing the story and on this world itself.”
“The biggest surprise in combat is when you first meet a new opponent. Many games use the design to revive enemies, sometimes to repeatedly gather materials or to earn something. But we have considerable confidence in the volume and quality of this work. That’s why we always want players to experience something new,” Qiwei continued.
Enemies not respawning lends itself to the vision S-Game has, though this doesn’t mean the game won’t be a challenge, as the developer also added, “If you want stronger numbers, instead of repeatedly tracing places you’ve already explored, please explore every corner of the map more thoroughly. This is a design choice. Conversely, the resources on the map are finite.”
Players Will Be Able to Reset Weapon Levels to Switch It to Another Weapon
Another thing confirmed in the interview is that players won’t be compelled to stick with just one weapon, as even if they level it up, they can reset it and grant that weapon upgrade level to another weapon.
This is crucial to the gameplay when taking on Phantom Blade Zero’s multitude of bosses, as some might require you to use a different weapon to be more effective.
Qiwei explains, “Ultimately, this game has an RPG structure. There is a building philosophy, there are multiple types of accessories, and by combining accessories and weapons, you can create a single build. That’s the kind of cycle that exists.
“When you can’t beat the boss, the most important thing is not to hone your skills and react quickly. To be honest, as I got older, I myself couldn’t keep up with the improvement of my skills. But after all, it’s an RPG. Use weapons that pair well with the boss or combine accessories to build the game. This game also has a system that allows you to easily reset weapon levels and switch them to another weapon. That kind of trial and error is exactly what I want you to do. Just switching to a different gear can often make the difficulty drop sharply,” Soulframe added.
So far, it seems Phantom Blade Zero seems to be ticking off every checkbox for action fans. Forthose tired of Souls-like titles when it comes to action games, you might want to keep an eye on Phantom Blade Zero, as the upcoming PS5 and PC title won’t be a Souls-like the developers confirmed long ago.
Phantom Blade 0 is set for release on October 29 on the PS5 and PC.
