PlayStation Plus Premium Conversion: Sony Blocks PS Plus and PS Now Renewal and Card Redemption Stacking

When Sony first announced the long-rumored new PlayStation Plus tiers last month, it was revealed that subscribers of PS Now would automatically be converted into PlayStation Plus Premium — the highest tier in the new Plus offering. Many saw this as an opportunity to save by stacking up on PS Now subscriptions, which were still on sale from third-party retailers. Well, the wording has since changed, with Sony now saying that the length of the premium sub will now match whatever subscription had the longest subscription, causing users to now buy up PS Plus subscriptions. Unfortunately, at this time, Sony has ceased the redemption of both PS Plus and PS Now cards, and even disabled the ability to extend either subs on the PlayStation Network.

As spotted by PushSqaure, multiple reports have been coming in from PlayStation gamers, reporting that they can no longer redeem their PS Plus codes that they have purchased from a shop.

In a follow-up email from PlayStation support, it was confirmed that the company disabled the function to prevent users from stacking their subscription.

“I have checked the voucher and your account and can conclude that as of now there is a temporarily deactivated function for PS Plus/PS Now subscriptions which does not allow for stacking of either membership on already active memberships.

We have verified this ourselves, attempting to redeem a one-month’s worth of PS Plus voucher code we bought online, as well as attempting to extend our subscription directly from the console.

And to be sure this was indeed only related to PlayStation-based subscription, we even tried to extend EA Play, which prompted us to select which extension we wanted.

While understandable why Sony would decide to do this, it certainly isn’t a decision that is sitting well with users, especially those hoping to save quite a bit on the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. No details on how long this suspension will be for, but for now, be warned with buying new sub cards and extending existing subscription as the card cannot be redeemed at this time. Hopefully Sony issues an official statement concerning this.
