PlayStation Wants to Aggressively Improve Profits With First-Party PC Releases

PlayStation PC releases

PlayStation may soon put more effort into their PC releases, as the company now sees opportunities to increase their operating profits with multiplatform releases.

Speaking during the Q&A section of their quarterly financial conference call (via Twitter/X user Genki), Sony’s CFO and COO Hiroki Totoki outlined the company’s goals and expectations. One big focus he spoke much on is how the company can improve on profits, seeing an opportunity for an aggressive push with first-party games coming to other platforms, specifically PC.

“In the past, we wanted to popularize console and the 1st party titles’ main purpose was to make the console popular. It is true, but there is a synergy to it. So if you have strong first party content, not only with our console but also other platforms like computers, 1st party can be grown with multiplatform and that can help operating profit to improve. So that is another one we want to proactively work on.

I personally think there are opportunities out there for improvement of margins, so I would like to go aggressive in improving our margin performance.”

With PS5 sale expectations lowered for the upcoming year and no plans for any established major first-party releases until after 2025, the shift in looking to profit elsewhere makes sense, especially when looking at the success of Helldivers 2. The title recently reached over 1 million in sales, with a good portion of that being on PC, seeing hundreds of thousands of users playing daily on the platform alone since release.

While PlayStation games have come to PC in the past, Helldivers 2 marks a rather big shift, as it’s one of the few to go to PC day and date as the PS5 version. That may be because it is a game as a service, though its success has likely made Sony reconsider their PC release approach.

As for how big of an impact that’ll have on future releases is something we’ll have to wait and see, but don’t be surprised if we start seeing more and more PlayStation exclusives come to PC, and much faster than they currently do.
