PS5 New Update 25.08-12.40.00

Heads up, PS5 owners! Sony has released a surprise firmware patch for the console today, December 2 (December 3 for those outside the US), and this is more than your standard stability patch.

The PS5 new update 25.08-12.40.00 download clocks in at 1.3 GB, and should be live now the moment you turn on your console.

Given this is an unannounced system update, don’t expect any new features to be implemented.

Per Sony’s console changelog it mentions that the patch does the following:

  • We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.
  • We’ve improved system software performance and stability

That’s about it, which isn’t surprising given it is an unannounced patch after all. That said, for those who’ve noticed that messages don’t get marked as read, this should likely fix it. With these stability patches, more often than not, Sony plugs something in the backend to prevent exploits and cracks, which the majority of the population has no interest in or idea about.

In other PlayStation news, the “End of Year” sale is now live, and it brings a fair amount of games to the discount bin. That’s not the last PSN sale of the year, as The Game Awards PSN sale should launch the day of the show as well.
