PS5 Update 26.07-14.22.00

It’s November, and that means we have officially entered launch month for Grand Theft Auto 6. I can’t believe it myself; after over a decade of waiting, the next installment in the GTA series is almost finally here. And while Rockstar has been working hard at keeping the title under wraps (despite the recent leaks) it seems that PlayStation is also working hard at making sure their platform, the PS5, is “hack-free” when GTA arrives.

While we don’t know the specifics, with recent movement in the PS5 jailbreak scene, we wager this update focuses on patching even more potential exploits.

It was a little over a week ago that PlayStation released an update for the PS5 that also brought security updates, and now they’ve done it again. The latest PS5 update, 26.07-14.22.00, is now live, though for the time being, it doesn’t look like they have made the update mandatory.

As for what it does? Well, here:

  • We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.

For those unaware, Sony is in a race against the homebrew community to get the PS5 jailbroken, which not only allows homebrew apps, but also allows running pirated software. While we aren’t entirely sure what security fixes these relate to, it’s very likely related to the PS5 jailbreak scene. Although it’s third-party and multiplatform, GTA 6 will undoubtedly be one of PlayStation’s biggest sellers of all time, so it’s no surprise they’ll do everything they can to keep the game from being playable on jailbroken systems. Of course, that’s likely to happen eventually down the road, but for launch, it might just be safe from piracy.

Don’t be surprised if another firmware patch is released leading up to GTA 6’s release.

GTA 6 will be released on November 19 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In other news, we ran a report about Bend Studio’s next game, which we think PlayStation fans will want to take a look at.
