A new report from Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase claims that the Nintendo Switch 2 release will likely happen later this year. This launch will significantly increase the shipment number of “amusement displays”, or LCD screens, in 2024, according to Hayase’s research.

The report was shared by BNN Bloomberg, who stated that Hayase surmised that a new Nintendo console is set to launch with an 8-inch LCD screen later this year. This information comes from his own work as a Research Manager for displays at Omdia. The production of these Nintendo consoles will reportedly double the overall shipments of amusement displays this year.

Previously, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser had commented on the company’s efforts to ensure a smooth transition to the next generation. He referred to a console’s “last year” of a life cycle while discussing how Nintendo is designing its next console with backward compatibility in mind. This seemed like a pretty clear indication that the Nintendo Switch was approaching its final year, a feeling which has been further cemented by Hayase’s findings.

The Nintendo Switch turns 7 years old this year. It’s lived a long and full life. It really feels like the time for Nintendo to send the Switch to greener pastures and usher in the next generation. We’re most curious to see whether the next console will retain the Switch’s portability and how it might improve on the console in performance, graphic capabilities, and overall ease-of-use.
