Report: Tomb Raider Franchise Sold by Embracer to Amazon for $600M, Amazon to Build Marvel-Like World

Last year, Embrace Group shocked the gaming world when it announced that it has acquired Square Enix’s western studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montreal along with various IPs for $300 million. Well, it seems the company has already profited from it, as a new report has surfaced that Embracer has sold the Tomb Raider rights to Amazon for a whopping $600 million!

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s mentioned that Amazon wants to build a Marvel-like franchise using the Tomb Raider brand. The goal of this is to connect the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series, the video game, the movie and possibly even more.

While we don’t know what the title of the next Tomb Raider game, it’s mentioned in the report that there are “additional games” in the franchise that’s likely being considered.

One source with knowledge of the agreement states that this is one of the largest commitments by Amazon after the Lords of the Rings. In comparison, Amazon is said to have spent an estimate $250 million on the rights alone to Lords of the Rings with that deal covering a multiple-season show (which is The Rings of Power), along with spinoffs.

We’ve reached out to Embracer to seek clarification on this, and will update the article if we hear back.

As for the new Tomb Raider game, it was confirmed a few months back that Amazon would be publishing it with Crystal Dynamics at the helm once again.
