Recently, Lucasfilm confirmed that the upcoming Star Wars Celebration, a major event for the franchise set to take place next month, will feature the first look at a new Star Wars turn-based tactics game. This game was first revealed in early 2022 and is the result of a collaboration between Respawn Entertainment and Bit Reactor, a studio founded by veterans of the XCOM franchise.

According to the Star Wars website, the game will be unveiled during a one-hour panel at the event on April 19th, so it’s only a matter of weeks before we know the first details of the game. But if that’s still a long time for you to wait, then you’re in luck, as we’ve just found some previously never-seen pictures offering a sneak peek into the game’s gameplay and UI.

Star Wars Tactics Game From Bit Reactor and Respawn First Screenshots and Info

The images, part of a Bit Reactor artist’s portfolio, are dated to mid-2023, indicating that they belong to an early build of the game. Internally, the game is known by the codename “Bruno,” and the gameplay screenshots showcase elements common to the turn-based genre, like an isometric view and a party of characters.

The screenshots showing gameplay depict two Mandalorians and a droid taking cover from Stormtroopers during a prisoner rescue mission. The interface reveals items that the player can use, such as thermal detonators and smaller, deployable droids. Other images explore UI design concepts, including a menu (using the codename as a placeholder for the title) and what seems to be a hub area located in a place called Kafrene Mining Colony. The hub options include: Armory, Holotable, Special Ops, and Black Market.

One noteworthy aspect is that the menu images display a distinct aesthetic compared to those showing gameplay. This contrast suggests they might represent two stylistic pitches for the game: one leaning towards a darker, moodier tone, and the other opting for a cleaner, minimalist design.

Unfortunately, the artist’s portfolio does not make it clear which platforms the game will be released on, but the UI shows us controller buttons, so we can expect it to be released on the usual current platforms, such as PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, without ruling out a possible release on the upcoming Switch 2.

Even though these images are approximately a year and a half old, it’s reasonable to expect that the core gameplay mechanics will likely be similar to what’s shown, even if visuals have evolved since this build. The good news is that with the event, which kicks off on April 19, just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long for an official look at the game.
