Rumor: Amazon Set to Acquire EA (Update)

Following this year’s ridiculous scenario where Microsoft bought Activision for $68,7 billion, it seems another one is set to take place later today, as a new report has surfaced that Amazon is placing a bid to acquire EA (Electronic Arts) later today!

This report comes from USA Today, where it mentions that Amazon will announce today that it has put in a formal offer to acquire the big-name video game company that’s behind franchises like Apex Legends, Mass Effect, Battlefield and more.

If true, this isn’t all that shocking considering Amazon still doesn’t have a solid foot in the gaming industry even after releasing big budget games like New World and Lost Ark. With the digital retail giant putting more emphasis on its streaming service with the launch of its bid-budget The Lords of the Rings: The Rings of Power, this acquisition won’t just give Amazon a slate of gaming companies that can churn out AAA titles, but it could also potentially open the door for new shows and movies featuring EA’s stable of IPs.

Same as with any rumor, treat this one with a grain of salt until announced officially. We’ll report back in later today if anything fruitful surfaces.

Update: CNBC’s Daniel Faber has refuted the rumor and said that Amazon is not going to make a bid for EA.

We’ll post an update if anything more surfaces regarding this rumor.
