Rumor: COD Black Ops Gulf War Will Feature an Open World Campaign

After testing the waters with Modern Warfare 3’s Open Combat Missions, the Call of Duty team is looking to expand their horizons. According to Insider Gaming, COD Black Ops Gulf War will feature an open world campaign setting much larger than any we’ve seen from the franchise previously.

For the uninitiated, Open Combat Missions in Modern Warfare 3 were mid-sized open environments where players could tackle objectives in any order. Stealth and guns-blazing were both viable strategies in these levels, and exploration could reward the player with new weapons or equipment. While they were an interesting idea, we didn’t think they panned out very well in our review.

Now, Raven Software seems to be evolving the OCM concept for Black Ops Gulf War’s campaign. According to an article by Insider Gaming, Gulf War will feature an open world setting for players to navigate between a handful of more traditional linear missions. The open world will feature typical staples such as fast travel points and vehicles to traverse in. It’s set to be the largest area in a Call of Duty campaign by a long shot.

We know Raven is capable of creating big maps through their experience developing Warzone. If this campaign ends up being anything like Modern Warfare 3, then “open world” just means that it’ll feel like playing Warzone solo against bots and without a circle to worry about. Hopefully, the campaign is different enough from the battle royale experience to bring something unique to the table.

COD Black Ops Gulf War has not yet been officially announced, and as such, treat this rumor with a bag of salt for now given the game isn’t even confirmed.
