In a new “making of” video, developer Mad Head Games delves into the backstory and motivations of Scars Above protagonist Dr. Kate Ward. Featuring Kate’s voice actor Erin Yvette, the video elaborates how Kate’s vulnerability and non-combat scientific background shaped the game’s narrative, as well as its “slow and methodical” combat system.

For those unfamiliar, Scars Above is an upcoming sci-fi third-person shooter set in outer space on a fictional hostile exoplanet. The game’s resource collection and combat mechanics use scientific approaches instead of brute force to effectively take on terrifying alien enemies. From the game’s Steam page:

A colossal and enigmatic alien structure appears in Earth’s orbit and stuns the entire world; humanity names it ‘The Metahedron’. The Sentient Contact Assessment and Response team (SCAR) – consisting of scientists and engineers – is sent to investigate.
Things don’t go as planned and the Metahedron hauls the team across space onto a mysterious extrasolar planet.
