SEGA President Calls Sonic Superstars a Disappointment

While Sonic Racing CrossWorld was announced at The Game Awards 2024 and Sonic X Shadow Generations passed 1.5 million copies sold, there’s still talk about Sonic Superstars, which SEGA considers a failure.
SEGA’s Expectations for Sonic Superstars Were Not Satisfied
In an interview with Eurogamer, SEGA President Shuji Utsumi didn’t hold back, calling Sonic Superstars “a disappointment,” while praising Sonic X Shadow Generations as a great game that met the company’s expectations.
“We were trying to do something creative with Sonic Frontiers. With Sonic Superstars it turned out to be a disappointment, in terms of the outcome compared to what we delivered,” Utsumi said, talking about recent Sonic releases. When it launched, SEGA suggested that Sonic Superstars didn’t sell well because Super Mario Bros. Wonder was released at the same time, and Sonic’s 2D adventure struggled to catch on.
Utsumi also spoke about SEGA’s new strategy with Sonic, “We have Sonic X Shadow Generations and the next Sonic movie, so we’re pushing things in the transmedia direction – movies and games working in harmony to make things bigger. But the core [of the experience] is the game. The game needs to be very good or else there is no transmedia effect.”
With the third Sonic movie coming soon, the next big game is Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, which has only shown a short teaser trailer so far.
