Square Enix Looking Into Own Subscription Service

Square Enix Digital Showcase

If you’re subscribed to EA Access, and Xbox Game Pass, and thinking about singing up for Uplay+ (for PC only), then you might want to sit down, as there might be another gaming subscription service coming our way soon.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda confirmed that the publisher is looking into starting its own Square Enix subscription service similar to EA.

We are exploring at present both possibilities. And we do already provide games for Microsoft’s Game Pass. But at the end of the day, the direction that we’re thinking about is having a channel of our own.

Matsuda admits that launching a Square Enix subscription service would require a lot of investment on the publisher’s end. Again, this is not a confirmation that we’ll see another gaming subscription service, but don’t be surprised if it’s announced sometime soon by Square Enix.

Do you think this is a good idea on Square Enix’s part or are publisher’s running this subscription-based business model to the ground?
