street fighter 6 update 1.29

Following the recent release of Akuma in Capcom’s flagship fighting game, Director Takayuki Nakayama appeared on a livestream celebration to share some pertinent information about the game’s future. Most notably, he shared that Street Fighter 6 balance patches, which have traditionally been annual affairs, are going to be pushed more frequently.

This news comes from a Capcom TV stream that aired on Monday. While the entire original broadcast is in Japanese, we were able to translate a message with Google’s auto-translate shared from Nakayama at the end of the stream:

“Thank you very much for playing the first part of the game over the past year. Thank you very much for playing the second part. The development is amazing. We’re working hard to make [Street Fighter 6], and I’m sure it’ll be interesting.

I think that that’s what’s going on, so I hope you’ll look forward to it. Also, it’s not just the new characters, but also the battle balance adjustments. We’ve been making adjustments once a year, but I’ll continue to do it from time to time. I’m looking forward to doing that as well.”

Obviously, this translation is rough, but Nakayama is confirming that he intends to release balance patches more often than annually. Other fighting games, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, typically push balance changes whenever they release a new character, so there’s a chance we could see a similar cadence with Street Fighter 6.

If the changes are pushed too often, it could be frustrating to the community, so hopefully these changes only come two or three times a year as opposed to every other week. Regardless, it’s nice to see the team express an interest in regular balancing. A developer who’s on top of the meta and ensuring a level playing field can make a huge difference.

How do you feel about the change to the frequency of Street Fighter 6 balance patches? Let us know down in the comments.
