Subnautica 2 – How Co-op Progression Works

Subnautica 2 is officially out in early access, and while many are starting their journey alone, one big new feature for the sequel is the addition of multiplayer co-op. This has sparked a lot of questions in the community, with one of the biggest being about player progression and how it will work in multiplayer.

Well, we have that answer for you, as Unknown Worlds revealed it to us during our media briefing.

How Co-op Progression Works in Subnautica 2

As detailed during our media briefing of Subnautica 2, progression works via a save system that every player in a session can create. There is always a host, but each player who joins in on a session can create their own save based on that session.

So if you’re playing with someone, and you end up creating a save of that session, with the host leaving, you can still continue progression from where you left off by becoming the host of a new session.

Additionally, you can invite other players who weren’t in that session before, and if the original host joins you again, the save will remember their inventory, despite you making progress on your newly created save.  So while inventory and such for that specific player remain, progression in building and missions will be shared, so players won’t have to play catch-up with one another.

What’s more, solo sessions can be converted into multiplayer (or vice-versa) sessions, and if it turns out you don’t have a machine capable of hosting a stable lobby, you can share that save with your friend, so that they can host instead.

Cross-platform progression is also supported.

Unknown Worlds really wanted to make progression as flexible as possible; whether you want to play with friends or solo, they wanted to be sure you had the option to use your save however you wanted.

There you have it, that’s how progression works in Subnautica 2. Not too complicated if you ask me.
