Tech Firm Omdia Predicts PSVR2 Unit Sales to Hit 1.6M in 2023, With Chance to Reach 10M by 2027

playstation vr2 review

The PSVR2 is an expensive console at $549.99, yet according to a games analyst, it’s expected to sell pretty well in 2023. Principal Games Analyst George Jijiashvili from analyst and consultancy firm Omdia predicts that the VR headset will sell 1.6 million units within its first year despite launching a little late in February.

EDGE Magazine’s most recent issue (#380) revealed these numbers in an article on the PSVR2’s upcoming release. For reference, the original PSVR sold 1.9 million units during its first full year in 2017. The estimated 1.6 million is a tad smaller than that number, but the PSVR2 is slated to sell even more as time passes. Sony recently claimed that they’ve finally solved the supply issues surrounding the PS5, and as more people buy the console, this should open up the market for more PSVR2 purchases down the line.

Based on estimates, the PSVR2 is expected to sell around 10 million units by 2027. It’s worth noting that this is still less than the Meta Quest 2’s total estimated sales as of this year, which clocks in at around 15 million units. Jijiashvili also points out that these are rather bullish estimates, with the underlying basis that Sony will be able to “deliver some really compelling games to drive sales in the first year.”

Fortunately for Sony, a good first year isn’t out of the question. With games being easier to port to the PSVR2 than ever before alongside new gimmicks that come from the headset’s new hardware features, fans of VR tech will definitely want to try out the PSVR2.

The PlayStation VR2 is slated for a February 22 launch.
