The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update to Support Some Mods at Launch, With a Few Already Included in the Game

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Update 4.06

With The Witcher 3 next-nen Update right around the corner, some fans might be curious what this means for mods. CD Projekt RED is aware of this, and has released info about The Witcher 3 next-gen update mods support, and confirmed that some won’t be able to work at launch.

The last PC update for The Witcher 3 was a staggering six years ago, and this gave modders enough time to fine-tune their mods without any interruption from updates. Check out what CDPR has to say about it:

Updating a game means that we change various files, so the mods that modify those exact files stop working. If we want to change things in the game or add stuff, it cannot be avoided, and our teams have to focus on making updates as good as possible, not minimising change.

The goal, according to CD Projekt RED in a forum post, was to make the transition “as smooth as possible.” So while not all of the mods will work come the next-gen update, there will be a good chunk of them that do. Here’s a list that the devs cooked up while the update was in development.

You can also take a look at the PDF file with direct links to the mod pages here. It’s worth noting that a lot of the incompatible mods are due to a change in scripts from adding in a new quest.

Because we are changing scripts in the update due to the addition of a new quest, most of the mods that are based on scripts will error out. You will notice this in the “Comment” column in the above doc as “script errors”. Using e.g. the Script Merger tool can help the authors solve those issues.

CD Projekt RED will also help modders post-release for any advice they need. The developer will also release a new version of TW3 command line tools.

Finally, the forum post mentions that the next-gen update actually already includes several popular mods. These mods came with permission from the authors and were properly reimbursed, too.

So even though the game won’t be fully compatible with all existing mods during the December 14 update, it’s good to see CDPR working closely with the community to keep the modding scene alive.
