The Witcher 4 Research Phase Done, Project Enters Pre-Production

new Witcher trilogy

Back in March, CD Projekt RED announced that a new Witcher game is in active development. While there’s screenshots, logo or offiical title released just yet (hence why we’re calling it The Witcher 4 for now), the studio did offer a new development update for the highly anticipated game.

In a new post on the company’s official site, CDPR announced that the “research phase” for The Witcher 4 has concluded:

In March 2022 CD PROJEKT RED announced the start of a long-term strategic partnership with Epic Games, thanks to which future games will be based on Unreal Engine 5. The Studio also announced that it was working on further additions to The Witcher videogame series.

– We are very eager to revisit the universe which has shaped our history to such an extent. We have recently concluded the research phase for the first game in the new Witcher saga, which means that from now on further development expenditures will be capitalized on our balance sheet – adds Adam Kiciński.

Adding to that, CD Projekt RED CFO Piotr Nielubowicz has commented on the next Witcher game in a video about the studio’s financial update. In it, Nielubowicz states (via Google translate), “We have recently wrapped up research phase, which means the project has now progressed to preproduction.”

Given how long CDPR is known to develop games, chances are we won’t hear anything tangible regarding this new Witcher game anytime soon. That said, it’s still good news that the project seems to be on the right path, and we can’t wait to hear more about it.
