CD Projekt Reveals Original The Witcher Almost Included Multiplayer
The Witcher series has a future filled with new games. The biggest one is The Witcher 4, but there is also a remake of the first game in development under the name Project Canis Majoris, along with a multiplayer spin-off called Project Sirius.
The multiplayer Witcher project is being developed by The Molasses Flood, the studio behind The Flame in the Flood, which became part of CD Projekt after being acquired in 2021, and it will be interesting to see how the project develops.
What many people did not know is that the original The Witcher almost included a multiplayer mode as well.
Old CD Projekt Document Reveals Multiplayer Was Planned for The Witcher
During a Digital Dragons talk, senior technical director Adrian Fulneczek revealed that The Witcher was planned to include multiplayer back in 2007, when the first game launched on PC. He used CD Projekt’s old archives and showed a document proving the studio’s original plans.
“We don’t have much in digital form, but we have some physical documents, and we would like to show one of them to you,” he added. “It lists the features we wanted to have in that game, among them a multiplayer mode, which didn’t happen, but it shows ambition.”
The multiplayer idea was eventually dropped because the developers did not know how to properly implement it in a single-player RPG. Even so, it showed how ambitious the studio already was at the time.
Many years later, after the success of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty, studio executives also considered creating a multiplayer Cyberpunk spin-off. That idea later changed into the possible online mode planned for the sequel.
