Looks like the next Witcher game is going to be an open-world experience, much to the enjoyment of fans. In the third quarter 2022 earnings report by CD Projekt Red, the company briefly mentions the announced Witcher remake. The project is titled “Canis Majoris,” but what’s really interesting is the description below the codename: “Story-driven, single player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher.”

The reason this is a big deal is that while we got an open-world experience in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this wasn’t always the case in the franchise. The original Witcher game that the remake is based on wasn’t open-world, and this was also true for its sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Here’s CD Projekt Red’s description of The Witcher for those who haven’t played the 15-year-old game:

The Witcher is a role-playing game set in a dark fantasy world where moral ambiguity reigns. Shattering the line between good and evil, the game emphasizes story and character development, while incorporating a tactically-deep, real-time combat system.

Become The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, and get caught in a web of intrigue woven by forces vying for control of the world. Make difficult decisions and live with the consequences in a game that will immerse you in an extraordinary tale like no other.

CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal any juicy info on the new Witcher remake (other than it’s being made in Unreal Engine 5), but keep your eyes peeled for any sudden announcements. In the meantime, fans of the franchise can look forward to December 14, when the free next-gen update for Witcher 3 arrives.
