While Respawn Entertainment admitted earlier this year that development of Titanfall 3 was scrapped in favor of Apex Legends, a new game mode inserted in Titanfall 2 today has players buzzing with anticipation.

The studio has added a new mystery mode called “???” with the description “Your rockets will blot out the sun,” which is a line in reference to Zack Snyder’s “300” where a character says, “our arrows will blot out the sun,” to which Michael Fassbender’s character Stelios replies with, “then we will fight in the shade.” (Watch it here).

Add in the fact that the Titanfall 2 servers were all sorted out recently, and well, you can guess that people are in excited for this to be potentially something.

Some fans of the franchise have speculated that this could be a tease for a potential Titanfall 3 announcement. However, Reddit user and Titanfall fan  DroubGaming has come up with a plausible scenario to the 300 reference

The new gamemodes’s description is based off the movie 300. People have been speculating it’s 3 letters, the number is 3, titanfall 3. This ain’t what they are hinting. Titanfall 2 came out on the 28th of October, 2016. Now, this year, the 300th day is the 27th of October… A day before the anniversary. Do you see where I’m getting at? We are going to get something revealed on the 27th of October that is Titanfall related. That’s what the game mode is hinting at. If you realized something I haven’t please tell me in the replies.

That certainly lines up somewhat. Of course, if that is the point, we’re about 30 day off from the announcement, which is kind of far off to be teasing something in-game, no?

Could we finally be getting an announcement regarding a new game or new something in the Titanfall franchise? Fans (including this guy) certainly hope so. Let’s hope it’s not just a limited-time mode for Apex Legends or something, and Respawn is using Titanfall to hype it.
