Titanfall Extraction Shooter Reportedly Cancelled as Layoffs Hit Respawn and EA
It seems that rumors of a new Titanfall game being in development may have been true, at least to some degree, as Respawn announced today that they have stepped away from two very early projects in favor of focusing on Apex Legends and the Star Wars: Jedi franchise.
It’s being reported, though, that one of the two projects was a new extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe.
A New Titanfall Game That Was More Likely a Spinoff Like Apex Legends

Earlier today, EA confirmed that it was laying off employees across multiple divisions, with the number reportedly reaching around 300 people, according to IGN. In a prepared statement, a spokesperson stated that part of the reason for the layoffs was in service of “driving future growth.”
“As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organization that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth,” an EA spokesperson said in an official statement.
“We are treating our people with care and respect throughout this process, working to minimize impacts by helping affected employees explore new opportunities within the company when possible and providing support during the transition.”
Respawn shortly took to X to release a statement, confirming the shift in focus within their studio, while also saying that they had to “step away” from two incubation projects.

And although they didn’t specify what these projects were, Bloomberg has confirmed with their sources that one of these projects was code-named R7, an extraction shooter set within the Titanfall universe. According to the same sources, the project was not close to being released.
This is sad news for the Titanfall community. However, for those expecting this to be a direct sequel to Titanfall 2, it seems to be more of a spinoff, based on the news that it’s an extraction shooter set within the same universe. That’s closer to what Apex Legends is, a game that is entirely different from Titanfall, though it shares the same universe.
It’s been nine years since the last mainline Titanfall 2 game came out, with no official indication that we’ll ever see a new one.
