Xbox CEO: We Are the #2 Publisher in the World; Aims to Do More Console Exclusives Once Business Is Healthy
With news that Gears of War: E-Day is now an Xbox console exclusive and most of the other titles are still set to drop on PS5, some might be wondering what direction Microsoft plans to steer this ship.
It seems we have that answer today, as Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently commented on console exclusivity and the game business.
PlayStation fans can rest easy for now, since it sounds like Xbox won’t automatically make all their upcoming games exclusive to the platform, though that can change quickly.
More Xbox Console Exclusivity Titles Planned, But Not Right Away
Speaking in a video interview with Fortune, Xbox division CEO Asha Sharma talked about console exclusivity, though they want their games to be “everywhere.”
The CEO said, “I think that we are the number two publisher in the world, and when you do that you want your games to be everywhere..You’re stronger when the world plays with you. At the same time, we’re increasingly becoming more of a platform, and it’s hard to find examples of platforms out there that don’t have exclusive services and content. And so this is a journey for us. Our business isn’t particularly healthy as you noted, and so we’re starting by introducing one to two signature exclusives and, as the business is healthy, we will look to try and do more”
Can’t it be plainer than that, no? Sharma just confirmed that they are pushing for more Xbox console exclusives, and they can’t do that now given the state of their business isn’t really at a healthy state — what with the Xbox Series X|S trailing the PS5 by a very, very wide margin.
In related news, Xbox VP Aaron Greenberg is on the hot seat, as he mentioned that the pullout of Gears of War: E-Day on PS5 was not a last-minute decision, though a recent trailer seems to contradict that.
