Massive Monster has released Cult of the Lamb update 1.09 (PS5 version 1.009) today for all platforms. This new update rectifies some user-addressed issues. Check out the Cult of the Lamb November 17 patch notes below.

Update: The official patch notes have been released!

1.0.1.49 
  • Fixed infinite devotion generated from followers.
  • Fixed cult upgrade sequence not occurring causing the temple and shrine not to increase in level – Added fallback to users who have encountered this issue.
  • Fixed weapons and curses not showing in dungeons even though they are unlocked in the player upgrade tree.
  • Fixed player’s hearts not increasing when unlocked in the player upgrade tree.
  • Fixed clock UI showing in the middle of the screen.

Unfortunately, Massive Monster hasn’t released the official patch notes just yet. The PS4 update history for the game says this patch is released for “fixes for user-reported issues”. Thanks to Steam user Professor Tenebrae, they have listed a Google document of many known issues. You can check out the big list below.

I. Softlocks/Freezes

For this document we define a “softlock” as a bug that prevents completion of the game or may require resetting the game state / losing progress in order to proceed.

Softlocks with known causes/workarounds

    1. (PC) Unable to load save files or create a new save file
    1. (PC, Switch) Cannot use inspiration to unlock anything after the Refinery (AKA, Tier 3)
  •  Patched
  • Confirmed Cause: Building the offering shrine and accepting a refined material is causing the issue (thank you to Dylphin020 for confirmation)
    1. (PC) Tier 4 glitch is the same as the Tier 3 glitch 
  • Patched
    1. (All Platforms) Cultists stand still while attempting a ritual, causing the game to soft lock in the ritual screen
  • Search “Pestilence” on this doc to see if your bug is related to this, a sign will be having sick followers.
  1.  
  • WORKAROUND: You can use omnipresent to escape
    1. (PC, Switch, PlayStation) Blocked from going on crusades after/during Faith of The Flock (locked in by the black barrier)
  • Possible Cause: Leaving the Temple too quickly, causing Ratau to not spawn and give you the next quest 

Cult Village Life Softlocks/Crashes

    1. (PC) Cleaning something up while entering the temple at the same time causes a perpetual cleaning animation, soft locking the player
  • Patched on Steam, no ETA for other platforms yet
    1. (PC) Interacting with a dead body via moving it through build causes the game to freeze with the animations still running
  1.

    1. (PC) Bodybag that player is taken to a grave disappeared after talking to another follower with a quest request, when interacting with another corpse, the previous follower in the bodybag respawns still dead and soft-locks the player as it thinks the player is still holding it
  • Possibly because player had a flag in-game that said they were already holding one, player was introduced to the low-faith mechanic, or the camera panning to another follower dying after consuming food
    1. (PC) If you try to resurrect someone who died while sick, you get stuck on the ritual
    2. (PC) Player pressed A (Xbox one controller) to indoctrinate a new follower; the camera zoomed in, but the indoctrination ‘menu’ never opened causing a softlock
    3. (PC) Unable to perform rituals after attempting to resurrect a follower who died while on a journey. Save/quitting to the menu and reloading did not fix the issue.
    4. (PC, Playstation) Doing rituals and other actions in the church will cause a period of waiting where the lamb and followers just wait around; this wait time increases until around the third or fourth church action in a game session, upon which it lasts forever, effectively freezing the game
    5. (Playstation, Switch) Player can’t move after interacting with a prisoner if they weren’t defiant when locked up
  • Try having a ritual which may fix it
    1. (Switch, PlayStation) Game soft-locks where player is unable to go out while doing follower quests, can’t get resources needed because player can’t leave
  • Letting the quest expire naturally (for those that are timed) does not end the soft-lock
  1. (Switch) After interacting with a follower, the camera is frozen on it and follows it, this also softlocks the player and they have to restart
  2. (Switch) The inspire actions only causes the animation to loop

Crusade Softlocks 

    1. (PC) Can be softlocked by a cutscene in a dungeon because the follower you’re attempting to save lands behind a load gate after miniboss explosion
  • Patched on Steam, no ETA for other platforms yet
    1. (PC) Mobs begin spawning in during the post-cutscene for Leshy, one mob didn’t finish it’s animation meaning player can’t kill it or be killed, softlocked from progressing further
    2. (PC) After dying while fighting Witness Astaroth’s minions, the boss was not on the screen, and using the Crown effect to resurrect, he didn’t come back
    3. (PC, Switch) If you select all of the tarot cards you have available to you in your deck, Clauneck starts to give you gold instead of cards, and softlocks your game when you use the offering shrine

Other Softlocks

    1. (PC) Game crashes immediately upon opening 
    2. (PC) When loading a save, the game brings you to the difficulty select screen, and acts as if it’s a brand new save file
    3. (PC) Game randomly locks, laptop reboot is needed to fix it
  • Listed as happening after sacrifices, rituals, etc. or randomly for others
  • Listed as also happening after moving to another area of the map after speaking to the second heretic
    1. (PC, PlayStation) Tabbing out while entering a loading screen causes game to crash
  • This may corrupt the save file and any other save files
  • Go into %appdata%, find the saves folder, delete the contents, uninstall the game, and reinstall the game
        1. Sadly this deletes all saves, but it does get the game running again
  • If you’re on PC, you can also try uninstalling and reinstalling via Steam
    1. (Steam) The game won’t progress past the initial cutscene dialogue and the screen goes “gray” as Lambert appears. Settings will appear frozen or “void” and unable to be changed. No “save” has ever been created by the player.
  • FIX: Disable Steam Cloud and clear any temporary files in your local files related to Massive Monster. Steam Cloud is pulling corrupted data onto your computer every time you play. (Credit to PKUltra on Steam Discussions.)
    1. (Switch) Softlock while fishing, can’t do anything nor complete the fishing and gets stuck in the screen. Has to restart/can’t fish due to it.

II. Tutorial

    1. (PC) Softlock to black screen in the beginning after the Massive Monster logo or when lamb approaches TOWW
  • Possible Cause:  Seems to be related to video playback issues
    1. (PC) First ritual consumes all bones in inventory, even if the player has more than the necessary number for the bonfire ritual
    2. (PC) Nothing happens after answering “Yes” to TOWW about creating a cult
      1. Possible Cause: Might have something to do with switching from “Yes” to “Absolutely” and using controller
    3. (Switch) Tasks and day cycle are locked after creating the shrine and doing the sermon, followers and player still able to move
    4. (Xbox) After doing a ritual, the player loses control of character, softlocking the game
  • Ratau didn’t appear when he was supposed to
  1. (Xbox) Unable to leave the first area of the game
  2. (All Systems) If the player doesn’t complete the first sermon, time doesn’t move and hunger doesn’t progress, so they can build up upgrades
  3. If you enter the “Curse Tutorial room” where you learn how to use curses for the first time but leave before talking to Ratau, you will be softlocked and have to reset or die.

III. Cult Village Life

Building

    1. (All Systems) Paths tiles stay after being replaced, but respawn and/or overlap after being deleted, can be seen coming back under other building tiles as well
  • Can happen for a number of reasons, DON’T STACK THEM

Resources/Farming

    1. (PC) Wood chopping part of a Darkwood crusade has all trees spawn on top of each other rather than spread out on the map
  •  Trees can grow on top of each other at your base as well, typically at the top near the exit. Followers treat the trees as if they are in different locations
        1. Tree only grow in front of there now, on top of eachother
    1. (PC) Farms stop working after upgrading to tier 2
    2. (PC) Planting can still be done with 0 berry seeds if you click it fast enough, it also glitches when you click fast enough and doesn’t take any seeds from inventory
    3. (PC) If you have no seeds and try to plant, it shows a placeholder keysmash
    4. (PC) Trees and rocks can be chopped/mined by ‘ghost followers,’ no followers are doing so but the action is being done
    5. (PC) Trees are visually there, but can’t interact with them
    6. (PC) Player can go out of bounds at the base while planting somehow

Interactions

    1. (PC) Dead body stuck on statue meaning player can’t move it and it causes followers to repeatedly puke
  • WORKAROUND: Bringing the follower back to life
    1. (PC) Player can get stuck in the confession booth
  • WORKAROUND: Save and return to menu
    1. (PC) Player gains soul/blue hearts randomly while still in the base
  • Happens after every sermon
    1. (PC) Talking to a follower and walking into the shrine/temple causes the player to spawn in the shrine out of bounds
  • A controller dying can cause this too, since the player will just keep walking
  1. (PC) The dead that were buried disappears when upgrading a grave
  2. (PC) When collecting money from the grand shelter, the bar above the shelter stays there visually, and remains there until you walk over (highlight) that individual shelter again
  3. (PC) Gathering devotion from the altar is extremely slow, and followers pray faster than the player can gather
  4. (PC) Healing bay won’t work for a follower even though they can interact otherwise
  5. (PC) Follower interacting with the refinery is still shown with a mining hat
  6. (PC) The dead body can’t be picked up even when player is interacting with it
  7. (PC) The dodge roll is cut off when doing the time skip
  8. (PlayStation) Followers in the prisons will glitch and stack right in front of the staircase leading to teleport elsewhere, when interacting with them they say they’re still in the prison but visually they aren’t
  9. (Switch) Miner hat glitches through the mines, appears outside of it
  10. (Switch) Red wisps at base not running away from the player, frozen in place

IV. Combat

  1. (PC) Dodging by rolling after immediately swinging a weapon makes player roll in the direction of the swing, not the direction player is trying to move
  2. (PC) If the third combo attack of any weapon is done at the same time as a dodge roll, it does an infinite loop and max damage
  3. (PC) When bleating, the player can dodge attacks as they don’t affect them

V. Crusades

    1. Fleece of the Diseased Heart sets black hearts to 1 when receiving a tarot card
  1.  
  • This can also cause the player to be soft locked in a dungeon, there’s an invisible enemy that they can’t attack or draw out
    1. (PC) Dungeon doors unlock before player has the right amount of followers needed
    2. (PC) Darkwood statue gives wrong input and output for gold
    3. (PC) Cloak that says you receive 4 tarot cards and can’t gain anymore is overwritten by the challenge where you lose a red heart to gain a tarot card, resulting in 5; didn’t lose the red heart either, just gained one
    4. (PC) Mobs that spit fireballs can glitch and hit itself with its own fireball damage
    5. (PC) When a follower that’s too high of a level becomes a demon, it gives no effects to the player while they’re in the dungeon with it
  • Person who reported this said that the followers who were 27 and 28 didn’t work, but the previous day when they were level 4 it did work
    1. (PC) Nothing spawning in the room where there should only be two tarot cards on a map
    2. (PC) In the rooms that replace your read hearts with diseased hearts, it acts like you have 4 total red hearts regardless of difficulty (leaving 1 red and 3 diseased)
    3. (PC) Curse slots go back to 4 after maxing out the weapon tree
  • Curse slots also may not go up at all
    1. (PC) Any hit to the bomb enemy in the third dungeon counts as a kill, even if it doesn’t kill the enemy; this means it stacks yellow fleece damage
    2. (PC) Whatever this is (I genuinely don’t know how to explain this one)
  • Enemy won’t stop exploding?
    1. (PC) Dialogue options in an Anchordeep follower room are swapped
  • Player Note: In Anchordeep, in a ‘follower room’, there’s a follower that says he wants to follow a warmonger. I answered with the right option (which said I would pursue war) and he called me a pacifist and said he didn’t want to join me
  1. (PC) Returning home using omnipresence causes player to lose all items as well with the Fleece of the Diseased Heart
  2. (PC) Player entered a ? room with 4 red hearts and 3 blue hearts, they got the message that ‘red hearts have been converted into blue hearts,’ and ended up with only 4 blue hearts instead of the expected 7
  3. (PC) Unable to use weapons after picking up a tarot card on rare occasions
  4. (Switch) No bones are dropped even though player has been destroying bodies
  5. (Switch) The statue is registered as an enemy, and doesn’t break a second time 
  6. (Xbox) Player can’t successfully get follower from silk area, as a spider leaves and they’re forced to restart the run
  7. Buying a spider from outside of the dungeon and then doing a run causes the spider to not have a follower for sale inside the dungeon
  8. (PC) In the silk area, the damage zone still stays after the chest is given even though there are no fireballs
  9. (Xbox) With controller layout C, both focus and curses are assigned to LB

VI. Bosses/Minibosses

    1. (PC) Leshy froze during a combo attack, didn’t attack for the rest of the fight but death animation played like normal
    2. (PC) Kalamar battle continues after player kills them, taking the heart does nothing and the player is killed and the game progressed
  • Killing Kalamar gives the player everything but the heart
  1.  
  • Player Note: I defeated Leshy, destroyed all grass/objects in the room then picked up the heart. The chest dropped and I got all items, but the fog didn’t disappear and I’m stuck in the room. I tried using my curse ability and rapidly pausing/unpausing but unfortunately these didn’t work. I’ll be reloading the game now to go through the dungeon again.
  1. (Switch) Boss can go invisible and then not drop a follower form
  2. When the player has the resurrect tarot card and they enter a bishop fight with a single heart, you die and resurrect with a single heart again; this gives the player the achievement for killing the bishop without taking damage, even though the player took damage and was the one who died 
  3. Defeating Leshy with Divine Blast leads to him dying offscreen and becoming unable to get his heart https://discord.com/channels/353179320644141057/1007292064091869345/1010423558125658132 
  4. Eyes don’t come back up in TOWW fight

VII. Followers

    1. (PC) Trying to indoctrinate a new follower as soon as the day switches causes it to freeze and you can’t interact with that follower

  • They won’t use empty generators to work either
  • WORKAROUND: Saving the game, closing, and reopening it will make followers resume worshiping/praying
    1. (PC) After converting a follower to a demon, player can’t leave camp because they have to indoctrinate a new member; but there are no new members, so player is soft locked
  • WORKAROUND: Travel to another place and then come back
    1. (PC) Cultists won’t use level 2 versions of things
  • Usually due to having multiple buildings of things (lumber, refineries, mines, etc.)
  • Possible Fix: Breaking and rebuilding sometimes fixes this
  • Possible Fix: Move the buildings and tell them to work again
    1. (PC) Followers appear to be ready to level up, but can’t be
    1. (All Systems) Devotee showing as a negative trait
    2. (PC) Follower died of ‘old age’ after being given flower amulet, never went into old age
    3. (PC) Followers teleport to the confession booth
    4. (PC) Can’t change followers’ names, player types in their wanted name but it resets to default
    5. (PC) Receiving the third commandment piece from a follower shows as the first commandment piece
    6. (PC) Followers no longer drop commandment pieces, meaning player can’t complete the Law and Order IV
    7. (PC) Trying to level up a follower as soon as they start to pray causes that follower to be ‘locked,’ can’t level them up even after saving and rebooting
    8. (PC) If you have multiple followers working in refineries, they start praying to the statue randomly around the map when they’re done
    9. (PC) Sending a sick follower to bed rest, and then sending them to healing bay will result in the follower appearing to get cured twice; once cured by the bay, the follower will exit, still sick, and go lie back down, curing themselves instantly a second time via bedrest
    10. (PC) Follower level just disappears after level 30, can only check what they are through the demon summoning circle by looking at the effect
    11. (PC) Speaking to a working follower ends their job and they don’t resume it
    12. (PC) Followers can be stuck in a praying loop, meaning they don’t do anything else including sleep even without the necklace that causes them to stay awake

    13. (PC) Can’t order follower to harvest farm when full
    14. (PC) Followers appear highlighted (with the white highlight) even though they’re not selected

    1. (PC) Follower moves to a certain spot through a weird route, plays the animation for collecting crop, and then walks away when nothing happens
    2. (PC) When followers harvest fertilized crops, they give 3 instead of the 5 that they’re meant to give when a crop is fertilized
    3. (PC) Follower says file string name instead of cult name
    4. (PC) When night comes while followers are in the temple, it registers as waking them even though they entered before they were sleeping
    5. (PC) You can keep refreshing a new follower during the indoctrination process after quitting to menu without saving and reopening, meaning you can basically ‘pick’ their traits by waiting until you have the best one
    6. (PlayStation) After taking grass eater perk, followers ignore all food unless manually told to eat
    7. (Xbox) Player can’t get commandment pieces to unlock the last doctrine, had a full one but it disappeared
  • Can’t get pieces from leveling up followers at all
  1. (Xbox) Elderly tax collector still collects taxes but cannot be collected from
  2. One of the thoughts from a follower is unfinished/still a placeholder
  3. (PC) A player can’t have multiple loyalty enforcers; a few days after converting another follower into a loyalty enforcer, the first one becomes a normal follower

VIII. Rituals

    1. (All Systems) (Six followers max appear in temple) Followers are not there for the sermon after gaining 6 followers, still get the rewards (proportional to 6); can’t select them for rituals
  1.  
    1. (PC) Player never receives the Sacrifice ritual
    2. (PC) Unable to Resurrect followers multiple times
    3. (PC) Revived followers don’t show themselves gaining old age, but they randomly seem to die because of it
  • Bringing back a follower that died of old age causes it to then become immune of old age 
  • Player Note: At the start of each day I get a notice on the left of my screen that “Followers has reached old age” (exact wording) and it shows a white sleeping puppy/pony follower follower (looks like a placeholder) yet I am not sure what follower or followers it is talking about because no one in my cult is becoming elder, but I think it might be referring to one of my revived followers. I revive followers as soon as the ritual is ready and my followers seem to die of old age randomly without being elderly
  1. (PC) Unable to perform rituals after attempting to resurrect a follower who died while on a journey. Save/quitting to the menu and reloading did not fix the issue.

IX. Sidequests

    1. (PC) Quests involving members fail instantly, drains faith without being able to do anything else
  • Listed as happening because sometimes the targeted member is dead
        1. Possible Fix: The issue MAY fix itself if the follower the game is focused on is resurrected and then dies again
  • If a follower is asleep, quest will fail instantly as well
  • Sometimes a quest will reassign a targeted member randomly
  • Not having enough bones for a quest will cause an auto fail
  • Follower can target themselves 
  • Followers can want to grieve for someone still alive, not possible
  • Followers can request to resurrect a living follower
  • Ritual based quests may also auto-fail
  • Quest may ask player to cook something not unlocked
  • Player may accept a quest but it registers as decline, draining faith
  • Followers ask to imprison someone already imprisoned
    1. (PC) After the first kill/hurt quest, the target is locked, and the quest can’t be completed as the target is already dead due to the previous quest
  • Doesn’t just lock during kill/hurt quests, can be anything; it all focuses on one follower specifically
    1. (PC) Quest rejection box says 35 faith is lost, but when declined it only takes 25 faith
    2. (PC) A Shepherd Without a Flock quest shows up as soon as player joins game, even though they already have multiple followers
    3. (PC) Entering the temple gets rid of followers requesting the players help
    4. (PC) The shroom bug requests mushrooms, but then does this and player is unable to speak to them
  • The player did receive the item of the quest, even without receiving any dialogue or the quest itself, or the animation for the item
  1. The lighthouse crystal quest tracks how many crystals you’ve collected, not how many crystals you have. If you’ve collected 25 crystals total but use them before turning in the quest, you can still complete the quest and scam the quest giver

X. Platform-Based

    1. (PC) Steam save file doesn’t sync between PC and Mac
  • Possible Fix: Delete the save files AS WELL AS making sure steam sync is turned off before launching the game
    1. (PC) Audio issues, can’t hear the game/music
    2. (PC) Audio replays over and over again before game freezes
  • Eventually unfreezes, but happens again later on
    1. (PC) Switch Pro and PS5 controllers do not work in Big Picture Mode or sometimes normally COTL, but work in other games
    2. (PC) PS4/PS3 controllers having trouble working, both in and out of Big Picture Mode. Reported on PC and Mac.
    3. (Mac) Many users have trouble with controllers working in general.
    4. (PC, specifically Steam Deck) Every set amount of seconds, the game will stutter and the character will jump/teleport across the screen
    5. (PC, Steam Deck) Framerate stutters consistently (almost like a heartbeat), regardless of what the framerate limit, v-sync or RTSS is set to.
  • No amount of tweaking via system control panel settings fixes the issue.
  • Framerate limiters also do not fix the issue

XI. Minigames (Fishing/Knucklebones/etc.)

    1. (PC) Knucklebones only lets you roll the same number
  • WORKAROUND: Travel to another place and then come back
    1. (All Systems) When you unlock a new area (Area 1) a rare fish is unlocked and you can catch it (Fish 1), the glitch kicks in if you decide to unlock another area (Area 2), when you do it Fish 1 is replaced with a new fish (Fish 2), which means losing the chance to catch Fish 1 forever
    2. (PC) When fishing, the fish can glitch through the floor tiles
    3. (PC) During the “Beast Below the Waves” quest, even after catching the 4 fishes required it may not be possible to return them to the fisherman, only the option to buy and sell is shown.
    4. (PC) Player can fish even though there are no fish on screen
    5. (PC) When fishing, the blue scrolls a player fishes up can’t be picked up/collected, this also prevents the player from saving until they go to a different area (another video)
  • Leaving the area can cause a loading screen that doesn’t end
  1. (Switch, PlayStation) Ratau never showed up, so player can’t play knucklebones even after beating the game
  2. (Xbox) Controller layout B gets softlocked while fishing

XI. Localization

    1. (All platforms) Settings menu text is not localized and appears as strings like “UI/Settings/Game/Languages/English”
  • WORKAROUND: 
        1. Disable Steam Cloud save
        2. Locate your save folder, (%USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Massive Monster/Cult Of The Lamb/saves)
        3. Delete the file settings.json
        4. Try running the game again
    1. (PC, Switch) Game isn’t syncing up to device language, sometimes there may also be random phrases in a completely different language while the rest of the game is fine
  1. (Mac) If player chooses Russian in the main menu, then resumes the game and enters a new room, the text disappears; everywhere where text is supposed to be there is a blank space; reopening the game is fixing it until player enters a new room
  2. (Switch) The word ‘mira’ should be ‘mina’ (Spanish, should be ”la mina de piedra está vacía” instead of ”la mira de piedra está vacía”)

XII. Twitch Integration

    1. Bed 3 collapsing with Twitch Help/Hinder
  • Patched on Steam/GOG, consoles don’t have Twitch Integration yet

XIII. Misc

    1. (PC) Bug report doesn’t work in-game

  • End-game players can try entering The Gateway to force a save too.
  • You might be able to fix it by downgrading the game (jailbroken consoles,) or erasing your entire save (might be worth it if you’re not far into the game.)
  • The issue can resolve itself eventually if you keep playing normally, players have reported using omnipresence, just letting days pass, etc. eventually resolving the bug.
    1. (PS4) Very bright red/purple screen, not solved by reinstall. Happened after 1.04 patch.
    2. (All Consoles) Fervour’s Host (Helob) Tarot Card won’t drop if you reach the endgame without getting it.

    1. (Steam) Can’t click on any tutorial windows such as the Cooking lesson UI towards the beginning of the game.
  • Workaround: Give Steam administrator permissions.
