Naughty Dog has yet to release the full patch notes for this update, but they did confirm that this update was for Grounded II, a documentary that gives us a look at the making of The Last of Us Part 2. It’s roughly two hours in length. For those who don’t own The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, the documentary is also available for free on YouTube.

We’ll keep an eye out for any additional changes, and will update the story if Naughty Dog releases the full patch notes.

People get different things out of different games. This game is a linear, narrative-driven stealth game that occasionally has you shoot things. This isn’t the game to play if you want to play competitively and beat other people, or wander off and explore on your own and engage with the story if and when you decide to, or get all your friends together and have a fun time together. This game is all about the story and putting you inside of it and making you think about things you may never have thought about before. If you’re not into narrative-driven games, this probably isn’t the game for you and that’s okay. Sorry if you shelled out a lot of money only to discover the game your friends and the Internet were raving about turned out to be a dud for you.

But if it’s the story you were hoping to enjoy but didn’t, you should probably try the Uncharted series. If you’re looking for a story where you’re the hero and save the day then Nathan Drake is the perfect protagonist. That’s not the point in The Last of Us (as a series) and if you played the first game you’ll know that Joel isn’t a hero even if you’re on his side. There’s a darkness to Joel that should worry you, even though the game goes out of its way to explain what he’s feeling and why he’s willing to do anything and kill anyone to get what he wants.

Exploring that darkness is exactly what Part II is about, and the game challenges you to look at what you’re doing from a different perspective. It’s a story about tribalism and how we delude ourselves into thinking we’re the righteous heroes and the other people deserve what they get. We dehumanize the people who aren’t on our side by calling them “wolves” or “scars” because it’s easier to kill them if we don’t see them as real people. But Part II literally flips the narrative on you and has you walk a mile in the shoes of the people you hate to see if you can overcome your bias towards your own tribe and see people for who they really are.

Did you notice the people you kill have names? Did you ever get one of those partial kills on the last enemy where the game stops and makes you kill them up close with your melee weapon? Did you read the collectibles written by people who are scared of what’s happening around them and just trying to do the right thing? Did you notice you were hurting other people the very way you were hurt? Did you notice all the things that were the same about the two protagonists? Did you realize they were two sides of the same coin? One story about getting revenge and the other about redeeming yourself after its done?

I wonder if you didn’t like the game because you had to play as the “bad guys” for so long. I wonder if you were looking forward to finally killing your “enemy” at the end but got angry because you were denied. I wonder how you think about other people in real life. I wonder what you would do in those situations.

Anyway, if you wanted a game where you get to be the hero and go on an adventure and save the day from an unambiguously evil villain, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Uncharted series. I’m sorry you didn’t like The Last of Us Part II. I thought it was excellent.
