Treyarch Working on Next-Gen Call of Duty? – Sledgehammer Looking for ‘Mod Community Experience’

A new job listing suggests that Treyarch has next-gen tools, and is looking for potential employees with next-gen experience. Sledgehammer, on the other hand, is looking for mod community experience.

As you might have heard, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have been staffing up lately. In recent job listings for both studios, phrases, such as ‘next-generation technologies’, were mentioned several times. Treyarch’s new job listing on Gamasutra is no different; it refers to the studio’s next-generation capabilities and candidates’ experience with next-gen consoles. It’s worth noting that last year GameSpot reported that Treyarch was working on a ‘new console’, which was speculated to be the Wii U.

The listing reads, “Come join the team responsible for the award winning games Call of Duty: World at War, Nazi Zombies, and most recently, Call of Duty: Black Ops!  Treyarch is focused on delivering high quality, fun and leading edge games for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Windows PC platform. Our extensive infrastructure, investment in next-generation tools and technology and strong leadership provides a solid foundation to continue pioneering great new titles for years to come.” Also mentioned in the listing, “the ideal candidate will be able to show good examples of lighting made for games, preferably next-generation console.”

If history is any indication, 2012’s Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch. It is rumored that Call of Duty 9 will be subtitled ‘Black Ops 2’, and will include fan favorite co-op mode, Zombies. If new consoles from Sony and Microsoft were to be released this year or early next year, Call of Duty 9 could possibly be ported over to the new consoles.

On another note, Sledgehammer has posted an new job listing looking for a multiplayer level designer, which fuels the rumor that Sledgehammer might break off co-developing titles with Infinity Ward, and develops its own sub-franchise of, you know what, Call of Duty. The position outlines that Sledgehammer is “actively recruiting top talent for [their] Call of Duty development team.” This means that the chances of the studio moving on to develop a new IP anytime soon are slim. One point that stood out to me is that it’s ‘recommended’ for applications to have “mod community experience”. As you might know, many multiplayer games have been greatly influenced by mods. What would you like to see in a next-gen Call of Duty?
