Epic Games Rids Unreal Engine 4 Of Subscription Fee, Now Free To Download

For those who have always had a passion in gaming and want to take it a step further by developing your own software, you now can with the help of Epic Games. The studio announced today that their latest Unreal Engine is now free to download.

“We give you everything so you can build anything,” Epic wrote in a recent blog post. “You get all tools, all features, all platforms, all source code, complete projects, sample content, regular updates and bug fixes.”

Originally, the engine launched in 2014 with a $19.99 per month subscription fee. As of today, it has now been dropped and those who were subscribed to the service prior will be compensated with a $30 credit towards anything in the Unreal Engine Market place. In place of the subscription, a 5% royalty will be issued to Epic per product, per quarter instead. “It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed,” says Epic.

Below is a video showcasing the latest projects that use the engine, including the impressive Warner Bros. Title, Batman: Arkham Knight.
