With the official reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 now over, fans and pundits alike are all thinking the same thing: how will cosmetics be handled in this year’s Call of Duty?

Developers of the shooter have said previously that they are foregoing the goofy operator skins the franchise has been known for the past few years, but that’s been a huge letdown, as celeb cameos, cartoon skins, and the like soon made their way into the franchise — usually after the first season is over.

Infinity Ward seems to be trumpeting the same thing on how they want cosmetics and even collaborations to be more “authentic” and “grounded” for Modern Warfare 4, but this time with a lot more conviction and even challenges people to bring it back if they do.

Modern Warfare 4 Cosmetics and Collabs Won’t Be Silly, as Devs Claim Fans Can “Keep the Receipt”

In an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Infinity Ward said, “Every aspect of Modern Warfare 4 is anchored in the game’s narrative. Every feature, every decision needs to feel authentic to what Modern Warfare is, and that includes cosmetics and collabs. We’re committed to keeping it grounded and transparent, and we want to hear from you on what you’d like to see in our game.”

If that claim wasn’t reassuring enough, the official Call of Duty CM X account got more specific, stating, “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts.”

From my understanding, this is the first time anyone connected to the franchise has ever said to keep the receipts for cosmetics. Will this ring true even after the first season? Let’s hope so, as I’m sure fans won’t forget this receipt.

So far, it seems Infinity Ward is on the right track, as the early skins revealed have been grounded, which was very different from Black Ops 7’s pre-order skins that didn’t look out of place in a sci-fi movie.

Given how Battlefield 6 ran over Black Ops 7 in sales, this could be the year that Activision finally listened to the player base.

In related news for Modern Warfare 4, this year’s iteration will not only offer two Prestige paths, but also have weapon bloom removed for hipfire.

Modern Warfare 4 will be released on October 23 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.
