Following Bungie’s announcement that active development for Destiny 2 is coming to an end, players are preparing to say goodbye to one of the most influential live-service games of the last decade.

While Destiny fans might not be happy with Sony’s decision on the game’s future, it also rings true for some developers too.

Among them is Rebecca Ford, Creative Director of Warframe, who recently spoke out on Destiny 2’s live-service future ending, and she blames the business side of games for it.

Despite Warframe and Destiny 2 spending years as direct competitors, Ford made it clear how much Bungie’s work influenced both her and Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe.

Speaking as a guest on the OnlyFrames podcast, Ford commented on Destiny 2’s live-service content support ending and said, “Obviously, that news was just cataclysmic. I think there is no world where it makes sense from someone who, you know, enjoys video games that you can just do that. You can just end one of the biggest things to hit the gaming industry in the past 10 years. But it turns out that is very much what happens when the business side of things, which I have emphasized with gusto how much we hate when that becomes the the biggest voice in the room. And you’ve seen, like, you’ve seen the business side of things be the biggest voice in the room for a long time. It’s just never hurt this much for a lot of people in our niche genre, I think, which is, you know, it’s unthinkable.”

Ford wasn’t done there, either. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ford said, “There is no Warframe without the legacy of Bungie games,” recalling her history with Bungie’s titles all the way back to Halo 3.

She also described Destiny as “a force of nature, loved and held in the hands of so many people who, for a moment, were part of the biggest thing in gaming.”

Ford admitted the news has been difficult to process, calling Destiny “the only lasting pillar I had to look up to” throughout her career. “I am making Warframe, I am saying goodbye to the only lasting pillar I had to look up to,” Ford added. “I am responsible for my own destiny.”

It’s worth noting that the game will receive its final Monument of Triumph update on June 9, which Bungie has described as Destiny 2’s final major content update. The patch includes Pantheon 2.0, updates to raids and dungeons, the return of Sparrow Racing League (SRL), and much more.

After the update, Destiny 2’s servers will remain online, but there will be no new seasonal content, expansions, or major updates going forward, though Bungie promises support will still be provided in the way of bug fixes and the like.

In related news, Valve veteran Chet Faliszek is worried about Bungie’s future after Destiny 2’s final update, claiming Sony no longer “cares” about the studio following Marathon’s struggles.
