Report: Xbox CEO Wants Faster Development Time on Fallout, Elder Scrolls Franchises
The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced in 2018 at E3 (remember that?), and here we are, eight years later, with nothing outside of a title card for it.
If you’re disappointed at how slow Bethesda has been in pushing out its flagship titles like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, that might be changing soon thanks to Xbox’s new CEO Asha Sharma.
Not only is this good news for Xbox fans, but video game fans in general — unless Xbox decides to make the new games platform-exclusive.
Xbox Wants Faster Movement on Major Franchises Like Halo, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls
In a new report by the reliable publication The Information (paywalled), it mentions how new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is looking to move faster on developing new games from beloved franchises Xbox owns, such as Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout. It’s also mentioned how Fallout and Elder Scrolls are “particular areas of focus” for Sharma.
Helping speed up development of these franchises is more money, as the report also claims Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood have approved of Sharma’s plan to spend more on top-tier games in the coming fiscal year beginning in July, though the budget isn’t set and could change.
While this might be good news for a lot of people, there is a worrying bit of info from the report too. It mentions that Nadella and Hood have not ruled out “restructuring” Xbox’s relationship with Microsoft at some point in the future if it would make the Xbox division a more successful business. Other options on the table include making Xbox a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft, a joint venture, or spinning out Xbox entirely.
If the restructuring comes to pass, this would make selling the Xbox division easier or creating a joint venture with other partners a lot easier.
Needless to say, this is all unconfirmed information, so treat it with a grain of salt for now. That said, this is very specific insider knowledge, and the source is known to be credible than most.
When it comes to the games, this is good news, as Bethesda has been known to take an insanely long time to develop its titles. The last mainline game released for the Fallout franchise was Fallout 4 in 2015, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released back in 2011. Over a decade has passed, and both franchises have yet to receive a follow-up, and it’s understandable that franchise fans are getting impatient.
If Xbox can somehow not compromise the game’s quality and make it so that Bethesda can push these games out faster, that’s a win, right? While there’s been no word on a new Fallout, Bethesda mentioned two years ago that The Elder Scrolls VI is in a playable state as an ‘early build.”
In other Xbox news, Sharma has announced a company “reset” while discussing a major crisis with the next-gen Xbox codenamed Project Helix.
