PlayStation Physical Disc Production for New Games Ending in January 2028
Here’s something we never expected to see this soon: Sony has announced that starting January 2028, Sony will stop production of PlayStation physical discs for new games.
Yes, that means that any game made by Sony’s stable of first-party studios will all be digital starting January 2028, which is less than two years from today.
According to Sony, this is “in response to shifting trends in consumer perference.”
Don’t Expect Physical Disc PlayStation First-Party Games in Less Than Two Years
Sony says that following January 2028, new games will be available on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only, and added, “this transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
The electronics giant states that this is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is the PlayStation division, to “adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.” This move wil also enable the company align more closely with how “most” of the PlayStation cpmmunity prefers to access and play games today.
Is this the way console gaming is headed? If so, that’s a scary future, especially for those who like to collect games. Will Xbox or Nintendo follow suit? We’re hoping they don’t, but if we hear anything about it, we’ll let our readers know.
In related PlayStation news, Sony has hinted that the rumored PS6 portable is indeed a reality and part of their plans.
The PlayStation division is also planning to pursue live service games despite Concord’s massive failure.
