GTA 6 May Have Already Generated Up to $260 Million in Pre-Orders, Could Surpass $5 Billion at Launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to change the video game industry when it launches on November 19. Even though the physical editions will not include a game disc, Rockstar Games’ new title is already breaking sales records through pre-orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Since pre-orders opened on June 25, there have been reports claiming that the game has already earned $1 billion.

However, analysis firm Newzoo says those claims are unrealistic because not enough time has passed to reach that amount.

GTA 6 Could Make More Than $5 Billion During Launch Week

GTA 6 revenue

According to a report from Newzoo, GTA 6 has earned around $260 million from physical and digital pre-orders so far. This includes both the Standard Edition and the Ultimate Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

While the number is very high for only three weeks of sales, Newzoo says it is far more believable than the reports claiming the game has already made $1 billion.

The company also believes GTA 6 could earn more than $5 billion during its launch week in November, with total revenue possibly reaching $5.2 billion. With 21 weeks remaining before release, Newzoo considers this target possible for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive.

“What the data actually shows is $180 million in digital spend across the US and the five largest European markets in the final week of June, translating to a global opening week of roughly $260 million, with most of the ramp still ahead,” said Ronan Patrick, analyst at Newzoo.

The report estimates that GTA 6 could make around $4 billion during its launch week alone. When combined with the money already earned from pre-orders, total revenue could reach $5 billion.

The reports adds, “Run that $260 million figure through the plausible band of pre-order curves, and GTA VI is on track to book between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in week-one launch revenue.”

For now, Rockstar’s marketing campaign has remained fairly quiet. The company has shared new screenshots on its website, but we have not yet seen a new trailer since the second one was released last year.
