As the release of RGG Studio’s upcoming Stranger Than Heaven approaches, new details about the game have started to appear, giving us a closer look at its world, map system, and combat.

The latest information comes from Tokyo Game Show 2026, where the demo of Stranger Than Heaven has revealed more about how the game plays and some of the fresh details RGG Studio has added to its world.

One of these details is how the map works.

Stranger Than Heaven Has Physical Maps That Change Across Eras, While Combat Lets You Wreck Shops

Whenever players open the map menu, protagonist Makoto Daito physically pulls out a paper map and looks at it. Instead of simply opening a normal game menu, the map is an actual item that Daito carries and uses.

It’s also worth noting that the maps will be roughly the same scale as those in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series. The maps will also change as the story moves through different periods.

If you didn’t know, Stranger Than Heaven follows Makoto Daito, voiced by Yu Shirota, across a 50-year journey after he stows away on a ship traveling from San Francisco to Japan in 1915. Players will explore five different eras and cities during the story, including Kokura in 1915, Kure in 1929, and Osaka in 1943. As the years and locations change, Daito’s physical maps will change with them.

Fresh details have also appeared about the combat in the Stranger Than Heaven demo shown at TGS 2026.

RGG Studio has made changes to enemy health and the pace of combat to make fights faster compared with previous demos. You can also destroy pretty much everything around you. Even a cheap eatery can be completely wrecked, as players can break tables, shatter chairs, and tear apart the inside of shops.

Another combat detail is that you can clash swords with enemies in Stranger Than Heaven. If you time the clash perfectly, you can stop an enemy’s attack completely, giving you a chance to strike back.

We also remind you that more details about the game will be revealed soon here, as we have hands-on impressions of the game hitting the site soon, so keep checking MP1st.

Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
