AMD Reveals Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs With Exclusive FRS4 Support

It looks like all the rumors are true, as AMD has officially revealed the RX 9000 Series GPUs, which have an architecture built from the ground up to leverage AMD’s new fancy AI-powered upscaler, FSR4.
RX 9000 Series Is Built on RDNA 4, With Exclusive FSR4 Support

As of writing, details are still relatively light as despite having a big presence at CES 2025, AMD is keeping much information about the RX 9000 under wraps. What we do know, however, is that the cards have been built with a whole new architecture, which is the next generation of RDNA, RDNA 4. The RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, the first in the RX 9000 series, will feature a 4nm process, second-generation AI accelerators, third-generation ray-tracing accelerators, and a second-generation radiance display engine. All this will bring improved ray-tracing, computing, media encoding, and AI computing, something that AMD cards have been lagging when compared to their competitor, Nvidia.
As for FSR4, the feature will be exclusive to the RX 9000 Series cards and assumedly supported by future AMD cards. That’s a massive shake-up to what AMD had previously offered with FSR3, where the upscaler was supported on a wide variety of cards by AMD and competitors such as Intel and Nvidia and wasn’t restricted to just newer GPU generations.

Unsurprisingly, fans are unhappy with this news, considering it’s the same tactic Nvidia used for DLSS3, which they restricted to only RTX 4000 GPUs. With the rumored specs of the RX 9070 series putting it almost in line with some of the current AMD offerings, some view this as more of a cash grab to get people to buy their new GPUs. Whether that’s true or not, well, that’s something we’ll have to wait and see as AMD has not released any benchmarks or specs of any of the RX 9000 series cards, nor pricing or release dates.
We know they are slated for Q1 of 2025, so it won’t be too long before we have all the details. Until then, we’ll just have to endure more rumors and speculation. As for the competitor, Nvidia, you can expect them to follow with the RTX 5000 Series and DLSS4 announcements, which will happen later today.
