Borderlands Movie Casts Jack Black as ClapTrap

Borderlands Movie Jack Black

Looks like one half of Tenacious D will be lending his talents to bring the world of Borderlands to life on the big screen, as Variety reports that Jack Black has been cast as ClapTrap in Eli Roth’s Borderlands Movie!

Here’s the exciting news tweeted by the makers of the Borderlands franchise itself, Gearbox Software!

Director Eli Roth himself, who worked with Jack Black in The House With a Clock in its Walls, expressed excitement in teaming up with the actor again.

“I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth,” Roth said. “Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen.”

As a NPC or Non-Playable Character in most of the Borderlands franchise, ClapTrap is one of the staple faces of the series who also becomes a playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. He’s described as a CL4P-TP general purpose robot that has been programmed with an overenthusiastic personality. Created by Hyperion, the robot loves to brag and be the center of attention, yet is also prone to cowardice and loneliness. Seems these are traits that make Jack Black a perfect fit for the role given his resume on comedy and films such as Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, School of Rock, and the Jumanji Films.

No release date has been given yet for the Borderlands movie, but in related casting news Jamie Lee Curtis also joins the ensemble as Dr. Tannis.
