The 2024 Game Awards have sparked significant reactions, particularly regarding the winners. While the announcements were exciting, the award results have stirred controversy. One notable example is the backlash against Baldur’s Gate 3, which followed Astro Bot’s win for Game of the Year.

You can check out a screengrab of the negative reviews left by angry players, and there’s a lot more where that came from.

You might be wondering why Baldur’s Gate 3 is at the center of this controversy, especially since it was last year’s winner and not in the running this year. The issue lies with Chinese users, who were disappointed that Black Myth: Wukong, a highly anticipated game from their home country, did not take home the top award.

If the connection to Baldur’s Gate 3 is unclear, here’s the explanation. The Game of the Year award was presented by Sven Vincke, head of Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3.

For many Chinese users, Vincke’s pre-award speech—which emphasized creating games not just for profit—was seen as hypocritical, almost as if directed at Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong. This backlash, however, appears to stem from a poor translation of Vincke’s speech, which led to misunderstandings. The tone and sarcasm in his comments were lost in translation, causing confusion among viewers.

Although some have suggested that the negative reviews from Chinese users were due to a poor translation of Vincke’s words, which failed to convey the sarcasm in his remarks, the situation remains noteworthy.

It’s important to note that despite this review-bombing, Baldur’s Gate 3 still maintains an impressive 96% positive rating on Steam, even among the most recent reviews. This indicates that positive feedback outweighs the negative, but the incident highlights how some users may leverage Steam reviews more for political or social purposes than to genuinely assess the games they’ve played.

What a shit article. If it was an actual review bomb you would see 100 to 150k negative reviews in a day.

Not 500.

Great ragebait post 🙃

An influx of 500 reviews from one place is review bombing and the article indicated why. Did you do a better write up? Unlikely…hardly ragebait either you’re just clueless

Lol glassheart nationlists cant take it they lost and use petty tactics to punish the ‘foriegn devils’ game. I’m surpirsed they can even use Steam given their governments anti west hatred.

At the TGA awards ceremony, Larian’s Swen repeatedly mentioned that games should not be driven by sales. After Astro bot, the game with relatively low sales, won the award, Chinese players believed that Swen was mocking other games, which is why this scene happened. Of course, this may be a misunderstanding.

Swen may not have known the results in advance, but if he knew in advance that the Astro bot with the lowest sales among the six games had won and repeatedly emphasized giving up sales, it would indeed be an interesting thing. Many negative comments from Chinese players also come from this, and you haven’t translated them.
