Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Considers Unreal Engine 5 for Remake Part 3

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi is considering significant changes for the final chapter of Cloud’s journey. Square Enix is exploring the possibility of using Unreal Engine 5 for the final installment, though some uncertainties remain.

In an interview, Hamaguchi expressed his interest in utilizing Unreal Engine 5’s advanced capabilities. However, he acknowledged the community’s desire for a quicker release, which might be jeopardized if they decide to transition to the new engine. “We’ll have to assess the pros and cons of Unreal Engine 5, but I think it’s possible,” Hamaguchi stated. “However, I think what our users want most right now is to deliver the final game in the series in a good form as soon as possible.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which took four years to develop, may face a significant delay for its final installment if the developers switch to Unreal Engine 5. This change could extend the development time, potentially pushing the release beyond 2027.

Despite the potential delays, I believe the final part of the trilogy should be the best it can be, even if it means waiting longer. Given that this is the concluding chapter of a beloved trilogy, the decision to use Unreal Engine 5 could ensure the highest quality in visuals and gameplay.

Square Enix has yet to make a final decision, but the development team is committed to delivering a game that meets the high expectations of fans, whether they continue with Unreal Engine 4 or transition to the more advanced Unreal Engine 5.

Until then, you can read our Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth review where we said, “The expanded story is riveting from start to finish, serving as essentially the Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy.”
