With the release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PS5, PlayStation gamers probably assumed Gears of War: E-Day would be the next game that would be released on the platform.

Unfortunately, Asha Sharma, the new Xbox CEO who stepped into the role this year, seems to have a different tune when it comes to console exclusives, and has decided against releasing the latest Gears entry on PS5 — presumably at the last second, given the evidence.

The latest Gears of War game is one of the few first-party titles that Microsoft deemed fit to not release on competing platforms, and to the devs, it’s a badge of honor.

Gears of War: E-Day Being an Xbox Exclusive Is Validation of The Coalition’s Work

In a video interview, The Coalition developers Aryan Hanbeck (Studio Art Director) and Matt Searcy (Creative Director) talked about Gears of War: E-Day’s exclusivity.

Searcy said, “We feel great because Gears is such a. . . [big] part of Xbox’s DNA. It’s woven into it. And at The Coalition, we feel pretty honored to have Gears and be the ones bringing that legacy forward. We know how much it means to people. We know how much it means to us. And I think this is true of most game devs. We are just passionate about our craft. We’re all gamers first and foremost. We love making games. We love making Gears. So, from our perspective, we just wanted to make the best goddamn Gears game we could. We wanted it to be a technical and art showpiece. And I think getting to see Asha on stage say ‘to return to Xbox, we’re returning to Gears,’ it’s a really cool moment. . . We’re proud to be one of Xbox’s main titles and I think it’s been that way for a long time, and it’s pretty cool to kind of show up now and fill that role again.”

Hanbeck also added, “We’re proud to be a showcase and we’re proud to be called out to be an exclusive. I think, in a way, it’s a validation of the work we’ve done.”

Given how the Gears of War franchise — alongside Halo — was one of the premiere Xbox exclusive games that propelled the brand to prominence back then, it does make sense for the latest game to be exclusive to the Xbox brand. Will it stay that way, though? We can’t say for sure. So far, Microsoft has not made any comments that suggest Gears of War: E-Day will appear on other platforms, though we wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually does.

Outside of Gears of War: E-Day, another potential big game that will most likely be an Xbox exclusive also is Hideo Kojima’s Physint. The spiritual successor to the Metal Gear Solid franchise is now being funded by Xbox, and even Kojima can’t say if it’ll be released on PlayStation.
