Halo Co-Creator Enjoys Halo: Campaign Evolved, but Says the Remake Is “Pandering to a New Era of Players With 0% Attention Span”
Halo: Campaign Evolved has generated plenty of discussion since its release, with players sharing different opinions about the remake.
Now, Marcus Lehto, the designer behind the Master Chief, has shared his thoughts. Overall, he supports Halo: Campaign Evolved, but he also has several criticisms.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lehto shared his impressions after playing the remake on Heroic difficulty. According to him, Legendary difficulty is for players who “love punishment.”
Halo Co-Creator Praises Halo: Campaign Evolved but Criticizes Some of Its Changes

He said, “Overall, I really love the upgrades – movement, cinematics, visuals – damn the lighting is brilliant.” In fact, Lehto believes the lighting in the original Halo, especially during the Flood missions, was “fucking awful.” He also praised the Covenant weapons, saying, “much more brutal with a solid punch.
While praising Halo Studios for bringing the game to Unreal Engine 5, he admitted that he does have a few complaints.
Although he enjoys the original story cutscenes, he described the new ones added to the remake as “absolutely cringe.” He singled out the Assault on the Control Room cutscene, saying he wishes he could unsee it.
Creative changes are not his only complaint. He is also not a fan of the game’s guidance system. He said, “I think the hints are too heavy-handed–pandering to a new era of players with 0% attention span.”
Despite these criticisms, Lehto still supports Halo: Campaign Evolved. He believes much of the negativity surrounding the game comes from social media, which he says “fosters that hate.”
It’s also worth noting that the game didn’t have a smooth development period, as Halo: Campaign Evolved reportedly struggled with management problems that also resulted in the cancellation of an unannounced Halo multiplayer game.
