Modern Warfare 2 Recoil Definitions Explained: Steadiness, Stabilization and More

modern warfare 2 recoil explained

Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 has some quite a few attachments that affect recoil, but the thing is, there are multiple definitions of what recoil is in the game. There’s recoil stabilization, smoothness and more. Just what does each one do exactly? MP1st is here to help, so players can know which gun attachment they need for their weapons.

Modern Warfare 2 Recoil Definitions:

Recoil Stabilization bonuses translate to a marginal spray compression, with a more pronounced effect along the horizontal axis. While the effect is not particularly noticeable, we do see a tighter spray pattern with the FTAC Tiger Grip on the Lachmann Sub (MP5):

Recoil Steadiness:

Recoil Steadiness bonuses result in a much more linear, equally-spaced spray along both axes. The vertical compression is particularly impressive, as seen with the Merc Foregrip on the MP5:

Recoil Smoothness:

Recoil Smoothness is seemingly tied into a less erratic spray as opposed to compression, but the effect, if any, is literaly unnoticeable. The spray pattern with and without the Forge-DX90F muzzle on the MP5 is virtually identical, with perhaps individual clusters in the spray packed more tightly:

Vertical Recoil Control:

Vertical Recoil Control sharply compresses the vertical expansion of the spray, but seems to generate horizontal deviation from the spray center as a consequence of squeezing the spray path into a vertically smaller area. M4 users will particularly appreciate the strong effect on their spray trajectory:

Horizontal Recoil Control:

Horizontal Recoil Control bonuses control the horizontal deviation of the spray, but unlike Vertical Recoil Control bonuses, their effect on the spray pattern is much less pronounced:

Recoil Control:

While it is probably the most broad-scope Recoil management attribute, Recoil Control has a respectable effect on the spray trajectory across both axes, in a similar fashion (albeit less effective) to Recoil Steadiness bonuses:

Aiming Stability (Idle Sway):

Aiming Stability bonuses taper the effect of the idle sway of the player character’s simulated breathing on the spray, and result in a much less erratic spray pattern:
