Modern Warfare 3 “Open Combat Missions” Explained

Modern Warfare 3 Day One Update Patch Notes

Just yesterday, Sledgehammer Games gave us our first look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s campaign. In it, the studio introduced a new feature for the franchise, which they’re calling “Open Combat Missions.”

Just what is this new feature? According to Activision’s press release, “Modern Warfare 3’s new Open Combat Missions innovation puts choice in players’ hands. These Campaign missions empower players with diverse strategies to achieve their objectives and forge their own paths towards success.”

Check out a video of it where David Swenson, the Campaign Creative Director at Sledgehammer Games, and his fellow developer Robert Pitts, Associate Director of Level Design, explain it:

Open Combat Missions still have fixed objectives but how you accomplish them is up to you.

Although these missions begin with a set loadout, Swenson explains, you can find a variety of other equipment including additional weapons, Supply Boxes, and other opportunities to change or confirm your approach to what you think is “the most advantageous way to completing the objectives.”

“We knew we wanted a bit more opportunity for the player to craft their own experience,” said Robert Pitts, Associate Director of Level Design at Sledgehammer Games.

Pitts explains that Open Combat Missions are intentionally dispersed throughout the Campaign to create a seamless, intertwined experience between these and the traditional cinematic missions. These missions allow for free roam within enlarged mission boundaries, but in exchange, there are minimal checkpoints, which actually offers you additional opportunities to return to your mission infiltration to rethink your strategy.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to fire out this November 10 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. You can read up on the open beta schedule on all platforms right here.

50 ways to get from Point A to Point B – but – Point A and Point B, are still, unmovable ‘points’. hummmm Doing the same thing over and over to get the same result is called crazy but getting to the SAME POINT – 50 different ways – is INSANITY !! Hows about you end the mission depending on your path? but for that to happen, you would need the help of AI hallucinations to write the game as you go in a huge map of the World as a base…… hummmmm – Maybe one day.
