New Mortal Kombat in Development, Creator Wants to See Street Fighter, Marvel, or DC Characters in It
A lot of people have been waiting to see what NetherRealm is working on next, and many expected Injustice 3 to be the next game. That idea got even more attention last week, when we reported that Injustice 3 appeared in a Warner Bros. Games artist’s public resume, listed among ongoing projects.
But when asked about it, Ed Boon — co-creator of Mortal Kombat and head of NetherRealm Studios — didn’t confirm or deny anything directly. Instead, he suggested that the studio has multiple projects in development, hinting that there’s more going on behind the scenes.
NetherRealm Is Working on the Next Mortal Kombat

Now, things are starting to look a bit clearer. In a recent interview, Boon said they are “actively pursuing another Mortal Kombat game,” confirming that a new title is already in the works.
He didn’t say too much beyond that, though. He mentioned there are “a lot of pots on the stove,” not just with games but other types of media too, and teased that a lot of great announcements are coming. At the same time, he kept things quiet, joking that if he shared more, he would “get in trouble.”
So while Mortal Kombat seems to be the main focus right now, it also sounds like NetherRealm has more projects cooking in the background, which could still include something like Injustice 3.
During the interview, Boon was also asked what characters he would like to see in a future Mortal Kombat game. He replied that he would love to see characters from Street Fighter, Marvel, and DC.
He explained, “I would love to see a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat. I think that would be cool. I’m a huge fan of Street Fighter as well. I’d love to see—I guess we could find probably, like we’ve had Joker, which was a really dark character—but, you know, DC and Marvel would be a lot of fun to see those characters as well.”
It’s also worth remembering that back in 2024, the Street Fighter director said they would be open to having a Mortal Kombat character in their game. With both sides showing interest, this kind of crossover now feels more possible than ever.
