Next Call of Duty Game Is Finally Skipping Last-Gen

While almost every major gaming franchise now is only available on current-gen hardware (PS5, Xbox Series X|S), that hasn’t been the case for the most popular franchise in gaming, Call of Duty.

Since last year with Black Ops 7, Activision has released every modern Call of Duty on last-gen and current-gen consoles.

That’s about to change for Call of Duty 2026.

Call of Duty 2026 Won’t Be Available on Older Consoles

Call of Duty skipping last-gen has been confirmed today by the official brand account, who stated, “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

There was a rumor circulating recently that Modern Warfare 4, which is said to be this year’s Call of Duty title, was being playtested on PS4.

While I’m all for having games played by the most people, it can’t be denied that the franchise still releasing for last-gen has restricted the franchise’s potential in giving us the best version it can be since it has to cater to the lowest common denominator, since players need to have parity and whatnot in multiplayer.

This time around, we’ll finally see Call of Duty unleashed to its full potential. Let’s hope it delivers more than just a visual upheaval.

Speaking of next-gen, we’ve recently ran a report on early details on the PS6, which is worth a read.
