Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for an Xbox console, only to find that your favorite background has been replaced by an advertisement for a game you may not even want to play.

This is exactly what some Xbox Series X|S owners are experiencing, as Microsoft has started displaying promotional backgrounds for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on their consoles.

What makes the situation even more frustrating is that the advertisement can appear even if you already own the game. Players who have no interest in Call of Duty are also seeing these promotions, despite having chosen their own backgrounds.

Fortunately, there is a way to stop these advertisements from taking over your background. The problem appears to be linked to a setting that allows Xbox to display special backgrounds for events and promotions. Since this option is enabled by default, players may see their backgrounds change without realizing why.

To stop this from happening, players can head to the personalization settings on their Xbox and turn off “show event-themed backgrounds” option.

It’s also worth noting that simply selecting another background might not solve the problem. This affected both those using dynamic backgrounds and those who had uploaded their own images. Only after disabling the promotional background setting will you be able to keep your chosen background.

Nonetheless, replacing a player’s personal background with an ad is not something everyone will appreciate. While ads on the Xbox dashboard are nothing new, players certainly won’t be happy to see their favorite backgrounds replaced just to promote another game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was officially released yesterday, on October 23, and if you’re wondering whether it’s worth buying, read our review of the single-player campaign, where we gave it a score of 9 out of 10, stating, “Modern Warfare 4 might just be one of the best Call of Duty when it comes to the campaign.”
