Nintendo President Suggests Company Does Not Want to Focus Only on Switch 2 Yet
Last week, Nintendo revealed that Switch 2 had already sold almost 20 million consoles, which made many people believe the Switch 2 would become the company’s main focus.
However, the original Switch is now close to 156 million units sold, and according to company president Shuntaro Furukawa, this massive player base is one of the main reasons Nintendo wants to continue supporting games for the original console instead of focusing only on Switch 2.
While answering questions from shareholders, Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo is preparing for a very gradual transition from Switch to Switch 2.
Nintendo Confirms Ongoing Support for the Original Switch Catalog

Furukawa explained, “I believe it is important that we consider how to expand the entire software business, including titles for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, instead of focusing only on sales of Nintendo Switch 2 software.”
To explain this idea better, he spoke about Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and revealed that around 40% of players own a Nintendo Switch 2.
Furukawa also made it clear that Nintendo wants to “encourage people to transition to Nintendo Switch 2 at their own pace” and that the company plans to “increase the Nintendo Switch 2 installed base over the medium to long term.”
This leaves two possible scenarios. The first is that because Switch 1 still has a huge number of users, Nintendo does not want to leave them behind too quickly. The second possibility is that Nintendo may want Switch to become the best-selling console in history by passing the PS2, with only 4 million units left to surpass it.
Regardless of what happens, it seems clear that Nintendo does not want to abandon the original Switch just to focus on Switch 2, and it could still receive some great games in the future.
In other news, Nintendo Switch 2 price could rise again in the future as Nintendo warns that high memory costs and market problems may continue.
