The original Nioh title was released in 2017. Set in Japan during the year 1600, players follow the story of the Western samurai William Adams as he fights supernatural enemies and sorcerers during the final years of the Sengoku period. The game incorporates a mix of Dark Souls-esque hack-and-slash combat with limited stamina and both melee and ranged weapon options. 2020’s Nioh 2 served as both a prequel and sequel to the first game, with players now able to use yokai abilities and create their own character under a pre-set name.

Nioh and Nioh 2 are available for PC, PS5, and PS4. The original Nioh will be available for free next month as part of the PlayStation Plus Essential Tier November 2022 lineup.
