Overwatch 2 Season 2 Start-of-Season Competitive Play Explained by Blizzard, Will Be Based on Underlying MMR

Overwatch 2 Update 3.57

If you’re a bit confused by how Competitive rank is done in Overwatch 2, Blizzard released a statement regarding Season 2’s competitive systems.

As players’ ranks are still lower than last season due to rank decay, Competitive games will be matched based on underlying MMR (Matchmaking Rating).

Here’s the full statement:

With Season 2 finally launched, players looking to rank up as soon as possible will find that they’ll need to really work for those gains.

When a season begins, we apply some rank decay to all roles, and over the course of a season players should climb back to ranks that represent their true skill level. That being said, all match-made games will still be based on your underlying MMR, ensuring we’re making matches as fair as possible.

It’s worth noting that Blizzard also mentions they’re aware that the competitive and ranking system still has issues.

We understand that we need to do a better job making these systems more understandable and will be addressing these issues and other parts of the system in the future.

Start-of-season rank decay and underlying MMR isn’t anything new to multiplayer games, but Blizzard hopes to add more clarity to these systems moving forward. This should help alleviate any confusion or frustrations that players may have with Competitive.
